We found out after decades of experience that hot tubs are safer with a side rail and safety pole. Especially when the ledge along the side of the tub is only ten inches wide. People walking by next to the tub would hold the tub side, at first, but we eventually realized that a PVC hand rail was much better. And when climbing in and out of the tub, a safety pole turned out to be a much appreciated safety feature. It was often used by people walking next to the tub as well. The T-pole on the ceiling is for anyone wishing to hold there, but it turned out it went unused.
